Visa Travel Proof

Flight itinerary for a UK visitor visa

Many people search for a "dummy ticket for a UK visa" because they've been told they need a flight booking but don't want to buy one before the visa is decided. That instinct is right. UK Visas and Immigration does not require a paid ticket for a Standard Visitor visa, and its guidance advises against paying for travel before you have the visa.

What a dated itinerary does is make your plans concrete. It shows the caseworker when you arrive and, more importantly, when you leave.

What the caseworker is assessing

The central question for a UK visitor visa is whether you are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of your trip. Caseworkers weigh your ties at home (work, family, property, studies), your finances, your travel history and whether your plans make sense.

An itinerary supports that case but doesn't decide it. A clear return date that fits a believable trip helps. A reservation for six months when you've said the trip is two weeks raises a question you then have to answer.

How long you can stay, and when to apply

A Standard Visitor visa normally lets you stay for up to six months per visit. You can apply up to three months before you travel, and a decision usually takes about three weeks when you apply from outside the UK.

Because of that gap, a held reservation made on the day you apply will have lapsed long before you travel. That's expected. The caseworker sees your intended dates in the application, and you book your real flights once the visa is granted.

Visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

Not everyone needs a visa to visit the UK. Nationals of many countries, including the US, Canada, Australia and EU countries, instead apply for an ETA, a short online application that doesn't ask for a flight booking.

Check which one applies to your passport on GOV.UK before preparing any documents. If you only need an ETA, you don't need an itinerary for the application itself.

Making the itinerary consistent with the rest of your application

Use the same arrival and departure dates on the application form, in any letter from your employer approving the leave, and on the reservation. If someone is hosting you, their invitation letter should describe the same dates too.

If your plans are still flexible, choose the dates you're most likely to travel and explain any flexibility in the application rather than leaving the dates vague.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a flight ticket to apply for a UK visitor visa?+

No paid ticket is required, and UK guidance advises against paying for travel before your visa is granted. A dated itinerary is optional supporting evidence that shows when you plan to arrive and leave.

Will the reservation still be valid when the caseworker looks at it?+

Probably not, and that's normal. Decisions take weeks and airline holds last hours or days. The caseworker reviews your planned dates, not whether the booking is still live on the day they read the file.

Can a flight itinerary get my UK visa refused?+

Not on its own, but inconsistent dates can raise doubts. Make sure the itinerary matches the dates on your application form, your leave letter and any invitation.

I have an ETA, not a visa. Do I need this?+

Not for the ETA application, which doesn't ask for a flight booking. You may still need a return or onward booking at check-in if your airline asks for one.
