Proof of onward travel for AirAsia flights
AirAsia flies to most of the countries in Southeast Asia that ask visitors for proof of onward travel, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. On a one-way booking, the request most often comes from the check-in agent.
This page explains why the check happens and what to show. We are not affiliated with AirAsia; the rules come from the destination country, not the airline.
Why an airline checks this at all
If a destination refuses you entry, the airline that flew you there generally has to fly you back and may be fined. So airlines, AirAsia included, check entry requirements before you board, usually against IATA's Timatic database, which records the rules for each nationality and destination.
When Timatic says a destination requires onward travel for your passport, the agent has to see it. It isn't AirAsia's policy and agents usually can't waive it.
What to show at the counter
A booking that shows you leaving the destination country within your permitted stay, in your name, with a booking reference the agent can read. It doesn't have to be an AirAsia flight. Any airline and any departure airport in the country is fine.
Have the itinerary PDF on your phone and the booking reference to hand. Some agents look up the reference; most just check the name, route and date.
The cheap-ticket workaround, and its cost
A common workaround is to buy the cheapest AirAsia flight out of the country and not use it. Fares are low, but they are typically non-refundable, so you lose the full price, and on a short-notice booking the cheapest fare may not be cheap.
A held reservation does the same job for a flat fee and lapses by itself. You don't have a seat in your name that you have to remember to throw away.
Time the hold for check-in
The reservation needs to be active when you check in, not just when you book it. Holds last from a few hours to several days. If you're flying today or tomorrow, most fares are long enough. Check the hold shown on each flight in the search results.
Frequently asked questions
Does AirAsia require an onward ticket?+
The requirement comes from the destination country, and AirAsia checks it because the airline is liable if you are refused entry. It applies to one-way passengers flying to countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Does the onward flight have to be with AirAsia?+
No. Any airline works, as long as it shows you leaving the destination country within your permitted stay.
Can I show it on my phone?+
Usually yes. Keep the itinerary PDF downloaded so you aren't relying on airport Wi-Fi, and have the booking reference ready in case the agent wants to look it up.
Are you part of AirAsia?+
No. We're an independent service. This page explains a check AirAsia passengers often meet; it isn't AirAsia's own guidance.
