Visa Travel Proof

Onward ticket for Bali and Indonesia

Most visitors to Bali enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival or an e-VOA bought online before the trip. Among the requirements for both is a return or onward ticket out of Indonesia.

If you are flying in one-way, perhaps continuing around Southeast Asia or still deciding when to leave, that's the document you'll be asked for, usually by the airline before you board.

What Indonesia asks for

The tourist visa on arrival allows a 30-day stay and can be extended once, for another 30 days, from inside Indonesia. To get it you need a passport valid for at least six months, the visa fee, and a return or onward ticket.

Citizens of most ASEAN countries can enter visa-free instead, for a shorter stay that usually can't be extended. Onward travel can still be checked. Confirm the rules for your passport with Indonesian immigration before you fly.

e-VOA or visa on arrival at the airport

You can buy the e-VOA online before you travel or get the visa on arrival at Denpasar (DPS) and other international airports. The e-VOA saves time in the arrival queue. Either way, the onward-travel requirement is the same.

Bali also charges a tourist levy for foreign visitors, paid online before you arrive or at the airport. It is separate from the visa and doesn't replace it.

Date it inside 30 days

Date the onward flight within your first 30 days, even if you plan to extend. An extension is applied for later at an immigration office and isn't something the check-in agent can take into account.

Once you have the extension, book your real departure. The reservation you showed on the way in simply lapses.

Where it gets checked

Usually at check-in for your flight to Indonesia. The airline is responsible for flying you back if you are refused entry, so agents on one-way bookings to Bali are often told to ask. Immigration at Denpasar can also ask, though it's less common.

The reservation needs to be active at that moment. Book it close to your departure and pick a fare whose hold covers your check-in time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an onward ticket to enter Bali?+

A return or onward ticket is listed as a requirement for Indonesia's visa on arrival and e-VOA. Airlines often check it at check-in for one-way passengers.

I'm going to extend my visa. Which date do I use?+

A date within your first 30 days. The extension is granted later inside Indonesia, so the check-in agent can only go by the 30 days you're entering on.

Does the onward flight have to leave from Bali?+

It needs to leave Indonesia. A flight out of Bali, Jakarta or any other Indonesian airport shows that.

Is the Bali tourist levy the same as the visa?+

No. The levy is a separate charge for foreign visitors to Bali. You still need a visa on arrival, an e-VOA or visa-free eligibility.
